Is Chamomile Good For Anxiety

For anyone with anxiety, chamomile is the herb of choice. Chamomile, because of its calming effects, has always been touted as a helpful beverage for people with insomnia.

A good night’s sleep is essential for good health. Anyone with anxiety or depression will find it difficult to fall asleep. For anyone staying awake all night, tossing and turning due to worry and thoughts of another day of problems ahead, the promise of a day of physical and mental tiredness is assured.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, found through a double-blind study, using 220 mg capsules of chamomile and placebos, that 57 percent of participants had significantly lowered their anxiety levels.

A study at the University of Maryland Medical Center reports that a cup of calming chamomile tea can be prepared by pouring boiling water into a cup in which 2 or 3 teaspoons of dried chamomile have been added. Let steep for 10 minutes.

According to the UK’s University of Nottingham Medical School, chamomile relaxes muscles and blood vessels. A second way that chamomile can be used to help sleep come sooner, is to soak in a bath scented with chamomile essential oil. The fragrant oil can also be diffused in the bath or bedroom.

Unlike antidepressants and sleep medications, chamomile has no known side effects and is not addictive. People who should avoid chamomile are expectant mothers and people with an allergy to the ragweed family of plants.
