Food Tip of the Day
Besides making delicious corn muffins, bread, pancakes, and other goodies, cornmeal has other useful purposes around the home and garden.
Add small amounts of cornmeal to a working compost pile. Bacteria and other organisms will devour the cornmeal to create an even more nutritious compost for garden plants.
Mix small seeds, such as carrot seeds, when planting. It will mark the row while helping to space the tiny seeds farther apart.
Cornmeal can preserve flowers. Mix 5 parts white cornmeal with 1 part borax powder. Sprinkle to cover the bottom of a box with the mixture. Lay the flowers to be dried on the mixture. Then sprinkle the rest to cover the flowers. Place in a cool, dark closet for about 30 days. The flowers will have dried and retained their beauty.
A good ant repellent is cornmeal because ants cannot digest the grain. Sprinkle some where ants are found in the home. The ants will eat the cornmeal, but never return.
