Raisin Water Benefits Garden

Gardening Tip of the Day

Water from soaked raisins can be used in the garden.  Most often the water is thoughtlessly poured down the drain.

The water in which raisins were soaked contains natural nutrients including sugars, potassium, magnesium, vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients that plants can appreciate.  The sugars are an energy source for microorganisms in the soil.  The other vitamins and minerals aid in photosynthesis, cell respiration, and keep the soil at the proper pH for healthy plant growth.

Fungi, bacteria and protozoa also love the extra nutrients provided by the raisin water.

Depending on how concentrated the raisin water is, it is best to use a diluted version of raisin water on plants.  Dilute the raisin water with an equal amount of plain water.  Then simply pour around the desired plant.  Of course, the raisin water can simply be added to a pail of water and poured around plants. This can be repeated throughout the growing season.

If using on houseplants, the raisin water should be used 2 times a month.  Gardeners report that tropical houseplants especially love this tonic.

During the winter months the raisin water should be discarded in a compost pile rather than discarded down the drain.

Note that raisin water is a treat for the plants and should not be considered as a replacement for regular fertilizer or other amendments added to the soil.
