Cleaning Tip of the Day
Baking soda is the best cleaner for stoves and filters in stove hoods. Grease and cooking grime simply dissolve away. Lemon or vinegar can also be added as an extra grease dissolving benefit.
In the oven gently scrape off any baked-on food. Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to the soiled spots and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Then wipe away with a soft, wet cloth. This also works for oven windows.
If using lemon juice add a few drops to the baking soda paste.
When using white vinegar, add 2 tablespoons for every one-fourth cup of water used.
If cleaning the entire oven, make a mixture of baking soda and water the consistency of cake batter. Spread on the oven surface. Leave the mixture to work for about 30 minutes. Then wipe out with a wet cloth.
If oven is badly soiled, spray white vinegar onto the dried baking soda. The vinegar will dissolve the baking soda mixture and make wiping out the residue easier. The vinegar will leave a fresh, clean scent as well.
To clean the filter in a range hood, remove the filter and soak in hot water with one-fourth cup baking soda added.
If using the self-cleaning feature of an oven, remove the resulting odor by placing an open box of baking soda in the oven. Leave overnight or longer if necessary.
