Does Exercise Lower Stress Levels

Health Tip of the Day

Everyone knows that a good workout after a stress filled day can help reduce the negative effects that the stress created. But studies show that people who exercise regularly do not react to stress in the same way as those who don’t exercise.

Any exercise, including walking, jogging, gardening or any other exercise that requires movement of all muscles causes the brain to produce neurotransmitters called endorphins. Endorphins energize the body and reduce the stress hormones of adrenaline and cortisol.

Researchers at Princeton University found that exercise creates new cells in the brain which are more tolerant of stress meaning less damaging health effects on the body. In the tests conducted with mice it was found that it requires three to six weeks of exercise for the effects to be fully realized.

A moderate walk of 30 to 40 minutes a day, or 20 minutes of more vigorous exercise such as running or weightlifting, is enough to provide great health benefits.
