Goodbye Weeds

Goodbye Weeds

Synthetic weed killers are poisons. They can cause many harmful health effects from rashes and headaches to liver damage, leukemia, and many cancers. Pets and wildlife are also adversely affected, not only humans. Organic weed control uses natural substances, including baking soda, a natural material, which acts as a desiccant and draws water out of plant cells. The weed then dies by drying out.

Water the plants that are going to be eliminated. Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda on small plants or a tablespoon on larger plants. Many gardeners have found that this method will kill the weeds in a few days. Repeat daily if necessary.

For more stubborn weeds, use more baking soda and make it into a paste to put on the plant. After the weed is dead, the leftover dried baking soda can be swept into cracks on sidewalks or along the edges of garden beds to keep weeds from sprouting.

For really hardy weeds make a paste of two parts baking soda to one part vinegar and apply this paste on the weed.
