Being out in the fresh air, and nature, with it’s flowers, trees, and grass has always been known to be healthy. Now there is proof.
Researchers at the University of Queensland, Australia, have discovered that the scent of mowed grass can help beat stress. Stress can cause headaches, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and cancer. When grass is cut, chemicals are released that produce the scent. Hexenol, a type of alcohol, and hexenal, a type of aldehyde, are the two chemicals that cause the stress-relieving scent.
It’s a physical fact. The amygdala and hippocampus found in the brain, are affected by emotions and memory. The hippocampus can be damaged by chronic stress. The Australian study found that under stress, the green grass scent helped to protect the hippocampus from stress.
So instead of dreading the weekend bask in the feeling knowing that caring for the lawn just may add years to your life.
Or just go outside and smell the grass as your neighbor does all the work of mowing the lawn across the fence.
