Household Tip of the Day
Cloves are an excellent spice to use to deter insects from your home, patio, and garden. Both flies and mosquitoes hate the smell of cloves and will stay away from it.
Simply placing a bowl of dried whole cloves in a room will make flies leave immediately.
To repel cockroaches, whole cloves can be placed in small sachets made from muslin bags and placed under furniture, behind appliances, under sinks, in kitchen drawers etc.
A small muslin or disposable tea bag filled with dried clove buds can be placed in a pocket to keep mosquitoes away while gardening, mowing grass, or simply enjoying the outdoors.
Stick whole cloves into bars of soap and place them around the yard or patio to keep mosquitoes and other pests away during parties, barbecues, and other outdoor festivities.
Placing attractive glassware with cloves soaking in water around the patio or yard will also help to repel insect pests.
Place a few whole cloves on any candles being burned. The heat from the flame will disperse the clove scent which insects will avoid.
Soak two tablespoons whole cloves in 8 to 12 ounces boiling hot water. Let cool and strain. Spray on plants to reduce mites and aphids. Do this in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
Some people have even had good luck sprinkling ground cloves on plants that deer like to munch on.
Whether using whole cloves or ground cloves, cloves are an excellent, natural, chemical-free way to rid the home of insect pests.
