Applesauce makes healthier brownies so one can enjoy them more often..
Cocoa powder produces rich, chewy brownies.
Applesauce reduces the amount of fat, sugar, and eggs needed. This reduces calories, fat, and cholesterol.
Applesauce makes very moist brownies which remain moist longer.
Applesauce Brownies
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup sweetened applesauce
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts
Note: As a substitute for cocoa powder replace the cocoa powder and vegetable oil with 2 1-oz squares unsweetened chocolate.
Mix cocoa powder, vegetable oil, white sugar, and butter together in small bowl.
Mix applesauce, eggs, brown sugar, and vanilla in another bowl. Pour into the mixed chocolate and butter.
Sift dry ingredients together and blend well with liquid ingredients.
Stir in nuts.
Pour mixture into a 9 x 9 greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Cool and cut into 16 bars.
