Broccoli For Cholesterol

Broccoli For Cholesterol

Broccoli is as good as a pharmaceutical drug for lowering cholesterol.

Broccoli, raw or cooked, is good for health. Studies reported by the National Institutes of Health show that steamed broccoli is as good as cholestyramine at binding bile acids, the mechanism in broccoli that lowers cholesterol.

Steaming broccoli enhances its cholesterol lowering effect. One study compared steamed broccoli to the cholesterol lowering pharmaceutical cholestyramine which showed that broccoli bound 33 percent as many bile acids as the drug.

Broccoli contains a substance called I-3-C. I-3-C helps to inhibit production of LDL, or bad cholesterol, in the liver. It also slows LDL movement into the bloodstream.

As a bonus, broccoli sprouts are a great source of an antioxidant called glucoraphanin which helps to lower blood pressure.
