Chamomile is a versatile herb that can help dogs just as it does with humans.
If dogs have allergies be aware that chamomile is from the same family of plants as ragweed. Any itching or rash should be considered a warning and the chamomile stopped. Always check with a holistic veterinarian first.
According to a holistic veterinarian, who is also a certified and accredited veterinary acupuncturist, here are some tips on how to use chamomile tea for dogs.
Chamomile can be soothing for dogs that suffer anxiety from thunderstorms or other noisy events that cause the dog to be nervous or anxious.
Chamomile can be given as a natural muscle relaxant.
For upset tummies, eyedroppers of chamomile tea can be given to the dog.
Chamomile tea is excellent for almost any type of skin inflammation. Chamomile tea can be used to wash irritated skin with a cotton ball, soft cloth, or gauze.
For eyes irritated by dust, smoke, pollens, and other irritants, chamomile can be used as an eye wash for dogs. The mixture is three parts saline solution to one part cooled chamomile tea. The solution can be applied as eye drops. A chamomile tea bag can be soaked in hot water and when slightly warm can be applied as a compress on the dog’s eyes two or three times a day. Let the tea dry on the irritated skin.
For minor infections from mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, or other insect bites, and hot spots, chamomile is exceptional. Apply cooled, spent tea bags to the sore spot for a few minutes two or three times a day. Some people have had good luck removing ticks by first soaking the tick with the tea bag or a piece of chamomile tea infused piece of gauze. This is especially helpful for puppies.
Puppies that are teething will also benefit from a piece of cloth soaked in chamomile tea applied to the sore gums.
