Chigger bites can cause irritation and extreme itching for several days up to 3 weeks. Here are just a few home remedies to ease the misery.
Prevent bites by putting apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and applying to skin throughout the day while being possibly exposed to chiggers.
Upon returning home, immediately wash bites with soap and water to remove any remaining chiggers. Apply a cool washcloth to bites to soothe itching.
Rub chigger bites with a dampened aspirin tablet or treat them with a drop of household ammonia. Either treatment quickly relieves itching.
Apply toothpaste, especially the mint flavored variety, to chigger bites. Let dry, then wash off.
Essential oils are effective. Lavender, thyme, and tea tree oils are several of the best essential oils to ease chigger bites. Apply one or two drops to bites up to 4 times daily. Lemon grass, geranium, eucalyptus, or citronella oil added to aloe vera gel and applied to chigger bites helps to relieve itching.
A pate of baking soda and water starts to relieve bites immediately with itching and bites gone within a day. Leave on for 20 minutes or until the paste dries. Then wash off.
Soak in a very warm bath with 2 cups of natural salt. Alternatively, use 1 cup Epsom salt.
One cup of magnesium flakes added to a warm bath helps reduce itching as well.
A warm bath with one cup oatmeal added can be taken everyday until itching subsides.
Coconut oil applied twice a day can help to relieve inflammation and itching from chigger bites.
Apple cider vinegar applied twice a day to chigger bites reduces swelling and pain, while the antimicrobial properties of the vinegar help to prevent infection.
Mix 2 or 3 tablespoons of natural salt into a strong chamomile tea. Spray onto bites for relief of itching.
To prevent chigger bites, sprinkle diatomaceous earth on shoes and socks before going out in grassy areas.
