Gardening Tip of the Day
Lure slugs away from plants with lemons.
An easy way to capture slugs in the garden is to lay lemon rinds in the garden. Overnight the slugs will crawl under the lemon rinds. Simply remove the rinds and dispose of the slugs. Toss the used lemon rind into a compost pile or leave in the garden to catch more slugs. The lemon rind can be buried into the soil.
To make a trap more attractive to slugs, pulverize lemon rinds in water and pour the mixture into a slug trap.
Slugs love yeast and beer as well as lemons. A combination of the three items can be used to make a trap that is irresistible to slugs.
To lure slugs into a trap combine cup up lemon rinds mixed with warm water, powdered yeast, and fresh or stale beer. Let the mixture sit to ferment for 2 days. Place the concoction into sunken cans, a shallow pan, or traps. In the morning it will be very satisfying to find dead slugs in the trap. Clean and reuse.
