Dried coconut flakes or shreds are easy to buy, store, and use but for best results coconut should be moistened before using in most recipes.  Here are different ways to moisten dried coconut.

Place dried coconut in a small dish and sprinkle with milk to soften.

Steaming coconut over boiling water can moisten coconut in 10 to 15 minutes.  A cheesecloth can be used to prevent the coconut from falling through the steamer.

Soaking dried coconut in warm water or milk for a minimum of an hour will moisten coconut.

For a sweeter flavor dried coconut can be rehydrated by adding coconut milk powder, coconut cream, or soaking the dried coconut in coconut milk.

To sweeten dried coconut for immediate use or to refrigerate, soak 1 cup dried coconut in one-fourth cup water with 4 teaspoons sugar.

Coconut milk can be processed by adding 1 cup dried coconut and 4 cups hot water in a blender.  Blend and strain.  Use immediately or cool in refrigerator for later use.
