Traditional goulash was made from chopped beef and onions. The other ingredients have been added over the years. Paprika was added to the recipe in the 18th century and is now a main ingredient that must not be eliminated or it is not truly a goulash.
Hamburger Goulash
8 oz. wide noodles
1 lb. ground beef
1 1/2 cups thin sliced onions
1/2 cup water
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
2 Tbsp cornstarch
2 tsp. paprika
1 3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp bouillon granules
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 bay leaf
1 14 oz can stewed tomatoes
1/2 cup thin sliced celery
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
Pinch of parsley flakes
Cook noodles according to package instructions.
Saute onions and celery in oil. Add ground beef and cook until beef is brown.
Add 1/2 cup water, tomatoes, bouillon granules, pepper, bay leaf, garlic powder, paprika, and salt.
Simmer about 10 minutes or until celery is soft.
Remove bay leaf.
Stir cornstarch into 1/4 cup water. Add to pot and stir. Mixture will quickly thicken.
Take off heat, garnish with parsley, and serve.
