Cleaning Tip of the Day
Grease stains can be easily removed from clothing with the following tips.
As the old adage states: Oil and water do not mix so washing clothing with water alone will not dissolve grease. The grease needs to be broken down so the water and detergent can remove the grease from the fabric.
Dish soaps and shampoos are specially designed to remove oil from dishes and hair. They work very well to remove grease from clothing as well. Gently rub either soap or shampoo into the stain with a soft brush. Let set for a few minutes and wash as usual.
Mix an equal amount of white vinegar and water. Apply this mixture to the stain and launder.
Aloe vera gel rubbed into grease spots will remove stain.
A small amount of toothpaste gently rubbed into a grease soiled area will remove the stain.
Shake a little cornstarch onto the stain. Leave set for about an hour. Gently rub in a little dish soap on the stain and wash as usual.
Baking soda will change color when rubbed into a grease stain. Remove the stained baking soda and reapply. Repeat until baking soda remains white. Then wash the item as usual.
A mixture of rubbing alcohol and salt in 4 to 1 ratio will remove stains quickly.
Dish soap works best for old set-in stains, while baking soda works well on fresh stains.
In all cases, wash the item in as hot a temperature as the fabric will allow. Hot water is superior to cold water when dissolving grease and oil.
