Summer is the time for garage and yard sales. Here are 12 tips that will help make your garage sale a success.
Have a big yellow couch to sell? An especially pretty red lamp? Anything with bright colors should be placed nearer to the street to catch the eye of potential customers driving by.
Keep the area tidy throughout the sale. If one table is almost empty move the items to a table with other like items. Do not let your sale looked “picked over”.
Advertise with big, bright, colorful signs. A minimum of 15 to 20 signs are recommended by garage sale experts. Make a list of where you place your signs. Outdated garage sale signs are one of the largest pet peeves of garage sale buyers.
Don’t price anything over $100. Customers are looking for bargains. A piece of furniture that needs to be sold for more than $100 should be sold in a used furniture store.
If your sale is in the summer when it’s hot, use umbrellas and canopy tents for shade.
When preparing for your garage sale, make a list of things you are selling. Then make a map for organizing your items. It will be much easier to set up tables, clothes racks, etc. according to your plan.
Place things in groups. Men’s clothes, women’s clothes, baby clothes, kitchenware, tech items, books, toys, pet supplies, etc. Make a big colorful sign in each area. Some people will just be interested in one section. The signs will save time for both the customer and yourself.
Do not decide to sell items on a whim. Especially if some items are of some sentimental value. After the sale you might regret selling something that you wouldn’t have had you waited a couple of days to decide.
Play a radio or stereo softly in the background. Total silence is unnerving to some people.
Pick up any empty sacks, dropped candy bar wrappers, styrofoam cups, etc.
Do not spend time on the phone. Mingle with the customers and be available to any questions buyers may have.
Lastly, think like a customer. Are your items clean, bright, and attractive? Is your garage sale store neatly arranged? Is this a sale that you might stop at at a moment’s notice?
