Gardening Tip of the Day
The larvae of the white cabbage butterfly is the actual pest that feeds on the cabbage leaves. When one sees the butterflies, it is time to take action to protect, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and other brassica crops.
The best way to control the white cabbage butterfly is to use a physical barrier, performing hand-picking, and attracting natural predators. Keeping small bird-houses nearby is an excellent way to attract birds to prey on insect pests. Placing a bird bath in or near the garden also attracts birds.
Since cabbages do not need pollinators using floating row covers is an ideal method to keep the butterflies from landing on plants and laying eggs. When applying row covers be sure the edges of the lightweight material is firmly connected to the soil surface so the butterflies cannot fly inside. Stakes, bricks, etc. are some of the ways to keep the edges of the covers down.
If there are only a few cabbage plants hand-picking the small green caterpillars is an easy way to keep the plants free of the pests. Be sure to check the undersides of the leaves too. Pick off any tiny yellow eggs that may already be attached.
Planting fennel, dill, thyme, sage, or yarrow near the plants will attract parasitic wasps which will prey on the caterpillars.
Do not plant brassicas in the same bed every year. Alternate beds every year.
If all these tactics fail, using an organic pesticide such as Bacillus thuringiensis will be effective. It is safe for humans, pets, and any beneficial insects which may come into contact with it.
