Kitty Litter in Garden

Gardening Tip of the Day

Clean kitty litter can be used in vegetable and flower gardens.  Never, used soiled kitty litter in a garden.

Kitty litter is absorbent meaning it holds water.  Kitty litter can be mixed into the hole when transplanting flowers, shrubs, trees, herbs and vegetable plants.  The kitty litter will hold moisture around the plants.

Kitty litter will decompose in the soil.  Place a thin layer of kitty around plants.  It will as act as a fertilizer just as compost does.  The kitty litter can be used as a mulch, or under mulch, where it will also help to retain moisture.

Many gardeners find that adding a ring of kitty litter around plants susceptible to slug damage, repels the slugs from the plants.

If moles, voles, and mice are pests in the garden, pour a good quantity of kitty litter into mole holes to send moles scurrying.  The scent of the kitty litter will repel voles and mice when used in the garden.

Kitty litter can help preserve the beautiful flowers grown in the garden.  Place the flowers with kitty litter into an airtight container.  Within a week or 14 days, the flowers will be dry and ready to use as desired.
