Use Cloves to Freshen Air

Use Cloves to Freshen Air

Household Tip of the Day

Cloves is an excellent spice to use to quickly remove cooking odors, and to make a house smell fresh, clean, and welcoming.  It’s perfect at all times of the year, but especially at Christmas since cloves is a common spice in Christmas baking.

A very simple method of using cloves is to simmer whole cloves for about half an hour.  Add more water as needed.  This is a great way to add humidity to dry air during the winter months.

Ground cloves can be set in an oven at the lowest heat setting, with the door slightly open, for about 30 minutes.  To protect baking sheet or pan, put the cloves on a piece of aluminum foil.

An old-fashioned method of using cloves was to stick whole cloves into an orange and hang it where the scent was desired.  This can still be done of course.  A more modern method to achieve the same result is to add orange peels and whole cloves to a pot of simmering water for 30 minutes.

Whole cloves can be crushed and placed in small sachet bags to be placed in closets, dresser drawers, and under car seats.

For homes that do not have pets, clove essential oil drops can be added to water and sprayed like commercial air fresheners.
