Cloves are a simple and delicious way to help lower weight and cholesterol levels.

The National Institutes of Health published a study about 4 natural substances in cloves which produce an enzyme that can help with weight loss and lower cholesterol levels.  The data also revealed that cloves can increase metabolism, regulate blood sugar, reduce food cravings, and reduce overeating by creating a feeling of satiety.  As a bonus, cloves also have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Put a whole clove in a cup of coffee to sweeten.

Clove water is a natural way to get more cloves into a diet.  Simply soak about 20 cloves in one cup of water overnight or 12 hours.  Most people can tolerate up to 3 cups of clove water a day.  Stomach upset can occur with higher quantities.

Clove tea can be quickly prepared by simmering 1 tablespoon of whole cloves in 12 to 16 ounces of water for 7 to 10 minutes.  Honey or other sweeteners can be added if desired.

To use ground cloves bring 1 cup of water to a boil.  Stir in 1 to 3 teaspoons of ground cloves.  A little honey can be added for sweetness.

Whole cloves can be steeped with green, white, or black tea for a different flavor sensation.  Drink plain, or with honey and lemon if desired.

Cloves can also be increased in the diet by adding spicy dishes containing cloves such as chutneys, relishes, and desserts.

Medical warning: Patients taking blood thinners such as warfarin, coumadin, etc. should not use cloves in large quantities.
