If exercise for good health doesn’t sound interesting, then maybe exercise to help keep one young will.

Studies done at the genetic epidemiology department at King’s College in London show that exercise helps protect the body against aging.

The studies revealed that aging occurs on a cellular level on structures called telomeres which are at the ends of chromosomes. People who do about two hours of exercise a week have telomeres that resemble someone about five to six years younger than their physical age; and those that did three hours of exercise a week had telomeres of healthy people nine years younger in age.

Swimming, running, gardening, and other activities are all good, but walking is the best exercise for almost every one of every age. Walking is especially good for the elderly.

Elderly people, who can walk for 150 minutes every week, are healthier than those that don’t exercise. That is the conclusion according to a study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Stanford University, Wake Forest University, and the University of Florida. The report showed that those aged 70 to 89 who remain active and continue with walking as a regular mild exercise are less likely to have health problems, be able to live in their own homes, and to have a longer life.

Even the elderly who have become sedentary can become revitalized by simply walking.
