Applesauce Use as Substitute

Applesauce Use as Substitute

Baking Tip of the Day

Applesauce is an excellent substitute for eggs, fat, and sugar in baked foods.  This is good especially for those who need to reduce fat and cholesterol from their diets. Applesauce also adds essential fiber.

As a substitute for eggs, 1/4 cup of applesauce can be used for each egg.  To keep original consistency of the finished baked item, also add 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder for each egg.

When baking, butter or oil can be replaced by an equal amount of applesauce.  Some baker’s substitute only half the fat in a recipe.  If the full amount of oil is replaced with applesauce, reduce other liquids by 1/4 cup.  Alternatively, use 3/4 cup applesauce to each cup of oil but retain the total amount of other liquids.

If using applesauce as a substitute, use a little less sugar than the recipe recommends because the natural sugars in the applesauce will add sweetness to the product.

Applesauce will add a little extra boost of flavor to a white or yellow cake mix.

Always use unsweetened and unflavored applesauce when using as a substitute.

When baking with applesauce, lower the oven temperature by 25 degrees F.  The baking time should be 5 to 10 minutes less than the time recommended in the recipe.

Because applesauce has a high water content, baked goods will stay moist and fresh longer.
