How to Remove Gum From Paw

Gum needs to be removed quickly from a dog’s paw. If the gum is sugar-free and sweetened with xylitol, the dog can become very sick, or die, if the dog eats it.

Ice is the traditional way to remove chewing gum from hair, be it human or animal. Simply hold an ice cube against the gum for 3 to 5 minutes to harden the gum. The gum can then be gently broken off from the fur.

Any vegetable or nut oil can be massaged around the gum. Oil breaks down the stickiness of gum. Creamy peanut butter, butter, margarine, coconut oil, nut butters, and salad dressing can also be used. Gently comb the gum from the hair. Avoid pulling on the hair. Repeat as necessary until all gum is removed.

Once the gum is removed, wash the paw with soap and water to remove any gum remnants and oil. Dry the paw with a soft towel.

These techniques will work to removed gum from any area of hair on the dog.
