A garage sale without prices is not as common as a garage sale with prices for all items. However, there are instances where not pricing an item can be beneficial to both the buyer and the seller. Most shoppers at garage sales prefer to see price stickers or tags, but in certain circumstances this garage sale tip, among many other success tips, can be used occasionally to the advantage of both buyer and seller.
If a seller has a vase for sale that they definitely want to get rid of for almost nothing, but feel that with a high price tag no one will be interested, they leave it unmarked. Someone who is really interested in the vase will offer a price. The buyer can accept the offer. The customer will be happy they got a bargain and the seller will be happy to get rid of the vase for more than they would have had they priced it.
Price items higher than the price you want for the item. This gives a margin for bartering. The customer pays less than the marked price and the seller receives the price they initally wanted.
Setting prices low are good for sellers who don’t like to haggle. It’s also excellent for customers who also don’t like to barter but just purchase the item and go on to the next sale.
Blanket pricing can work for some items for like items. For example, “all necklaces $1.00 each”, “all coats $5.00 each”, etc. This also makes it easy for lowering prices toward the end of the sale when items can be discounted to “3 for a $1.00”, or a “bagful for $1.00.
Have a box of stuffed toys and mark the box “All stuffed toys $2.00” instead of putting a price on each one.
Visit garage sales in the neighborhood to see what prices other garage sale sellers are posting.
A general rule of thumb is to charge 30% of the full price for larger items that are in excellent condition. Most other items should be marked at 10 to 20 percent of their original prices.
A garage sale with prices will always be more successful than a garage sale without prices but for that one or two items that you’ve always wanted to get rid of, no price may just be the right price.
