How to Slow Bananas From Ripening

Food Tip of the Day

Bananas are one fruit that ripen more quickly than most people would like. Here are some tips to keep them staying fresh longer.

Wrap bananas individually in pages of newspaper. Store them in the fruit bin of the refrigerator and remove the paper just before planning on using the banana.

Do not place bananas near stoves, heaters, or windows where the sun might shine on them. Keep bananas in a cool, dark place such as a cupboard, drawer, or pantry.

Buy a variety of bananas ranging from green, slightly green, to yellow. The ripe ones can be eaten first while the others slowly ripen.

Remove bananas from any plastic wrappings or bags as soon as possible. Keeping them exposed to room temperature air will let them ripen naturally.

Keep bananas away from apples, peaches, and any fruit that releases ethylene gas. Ethylene gas is a good way to ripen green bananas quickly if fast ripening is desired.

Lastly, keep those banana peels to ease insect bites, rashes, and dry skin.
