Many herbs are used for Christmas baking and holiday meals. But rosemary has a special connection with Christmas.
It is said that Mary draped her cloak on a rosemary bush so rosemary is sometimes called the Holy Herb.
In an old French dialect incensier was the word for rosemary. Rosemary earned the term incensier because it was used as an inexpensive, but pleasant, incense. In those ancient times, herbs were burned to kill germs. Rosemary was considered one of the best herbs for cleanliness. During WWII rosemary was used in French hospitals, churches, courtrooms, and other public places as an antiseptic.
Spraying a room with water and alcohol infused with rosemary essential oil makes a natural disinfectant. Rosemary is also very helpful in keeping a healthy immune system. It is delicious in many recipes, especially delectable in chicken dishes. Both of which are especially good during the holiday season which coincides with the cold and flu season.
Rosemary can be grown as a houseplant and used fresh through the year.
