Food Tip of the Day
Gelatin is excellent for making gelatin desserts, but it is also helpful in other ways in the kitchen.
When making ice cream, add one envelope of unflavored gelatin for a recipe calling for 2 cups of milk. As a result, the ice cream will stay softer and be creamier.
Gelatin can be used as an egg substitute. Mix 1 tablespoon dry gelatin with 1 tablespoon warm water. Then add 2 tablespoons of hot water and stir until the gelatin mixture dissolves. Let sit for 2 to 3 minutes. Then add gelatin to other ingredients.
Sprinkle dry granules of colored gelatin on sugar cookies before baking them.
Sprinkle flavored gelatin on a dollop of whipped topping.
The next time you make an apple pie, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of lemon-flavored gelatin over the apples before putting on the top crust. The flavor is delicious, and the gelatin prevents the juice from running over as the pie bakes.
Dissolve 1 teaspoon gelatin in 1 tablespoon water. Add to 1 cup whipping cream and whip as usual. This will stabilize the whipped cream so it will not collapse and become watery.
Flavored gelatin can be dissolved in punch mixtures for extra flavor.
