Garage Sale Permits

Before having a garage sale be sure to check whether your city or town requires a permit fee.

Some communities charge fees to raise extra money for the city. Other cities do charge fees in order to ensure that only homeowners hold garage sales selling personal items and are not conducting businesses in their backyards.

Because the process of filing the applications costs more than the fees and with no way to be sure a homeowner having a garage sale actually has a permit, some communities are eliminating the need for permits.
