Litter Box Cleaning Tips

Pets Tip of the Day

Cat litter boxes can be open, covered, or disguised as planters. They can be filled with purchased cat litter, or filled with cheap torn newspapers, sand, soil, wood shavings, and many other easy-to-dispose fillers. But no matter what is used, the material needs to be free of odor, and safe for both the cats and owners.

The most important step in cleaning a litter box is to empty it at least once a week. Then soak the box in hot water for a few minutes. Deodorizers are not needed and can cause allergic reactions for the cats using it.

Veterinarians most commonly recommend unscented, clumping cat litter for most cat owners. Scented cat litter can cause health problems for cats.

An excellent natural deodorizer is baking soda. Sprinkle a thin layer on the bottom of the litter box and pour the litter on top. The cat will stir the baking soda into the litter as they scratch in the box.

For those who use plastic liners in the litter box, tears in the plastic can cause liquids to seep out into the bottom of the litter box. To make cleanup easier sprinkle a layer of sugar in the box before adding the liner. Sugar is absorbent so will soak up any dampness that seeps through the liner, keeping everything solid.
