Vanilla Eases Sugar Cravings

Vanilla Eases Sugar Cravings

Health Tip of the Day

Vanilla, a favorite flavoring extract used for baking, is a delicious approach in lowering sugar and chocolate cravings.

The easiest way to stop a sugar craving is to put 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a cup of water and drink it.  According to a Danish study this helped 80 percent of those who tried it.

A study, conducted at St. George’s hospital in London, found that dieters were able to reduce sweet food cravings by inhaling the scent of vanilla.  The chocolate cravings by participants were lowered by 50 percent.  Vanilla scented air fresheners, incense, perfumes, candles, and essential oils were effective.

Vanilla has the ability to make food taste sweet without the additional calories of sugar or other sweeteners.  According to a study at Penn State, scientists found that vanilla-flavored milk in coffee, tea, and smoothies, makes the beverage taste sweeter without added sugar or other sweeteners.

Water, with about 25 drops of vanilla essential oil mixed in, can be sprayed and massaged onto the skin to stop a sugar craving.

Sipping herbal teas containing vanilla can help lower the desire for a sugary treat.

Some people have found that wearing vanilla flavored lip gloss helps.

Wearing vanilla scented perfume can be a way to keep a vanilla scent within reach.

Burning vanilla scented incense or spraying vanilla scented air fresheners are helpful for others.

While all these methods work for most people, there are those who say that smelling the scent of vanilla actually triggers a sugar craving,  but for those for whom vanilla is effective, it’s a delicious way to break the sugar craving habit.
