Cleaning melted wax from candlesticks and candleholders is much easier than it appears.
The first trick is to snuff out candles before they reach the last inch or so, but this is easier said than done.
Many people find that placing candles in the freezer for 1 to 8 hours before burning helps to keep candles from dripping. Tapered candles require less freezer time than pillar and votive candles. Freezing candles also lengthens burning time.
Some people have had good luck making candles dripless by soaking them for a couple of hours in water with a tablespoon of salt before burning.
The fastest and easiest method to prevent melted wax from accumulating is to spray the candleholder with cooking oil immediately before inserting the candle. The oil will keep the melted wax from sticking.
If all else fails, the easiest way to remove hardened wax from a candleholder is to place the holder in a pot of boiling water. The hot water will melt the wax so the candleholder can be cleaned and dried. For candlesticks too large for a pot of water, a hair dryer will achieve the same result.
Another simple method is to place the candle holder in a plastic bag and place into the freezer. The ice-cold wax will dislodge easily from the candleholder. For candlesticks too large for a freezer, an icepack can be placed on the area of the candle needing to be cleaned.
