Jalapenos are the most popular hot pepper eaten and grown in gardens today.  Jalapenos can be prepared in numerous dishes, including desserts.

One unusual trivia fact about jalapenos is that it is one vegetable that had a ride into outer space in the 1980’s on the Columbia space shuttle.

The Aztecs dried and smoked jalapenos to preserve them for year-round availability.

Jalapenos received their name from Xalapa, the city in Mexico from where they were first grown.  Xalapa means “from Jalapa”.

Jalapenos are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, capsaicin and potassium,.  The capsaicin and potassium are helpful in decreasing migraine headaches, regulating blood sugar, lowering blood pressure, and reducing heart attacks.

The average jalapeno is 2 to 3 inches long, but can grown to 5 inches in length.

The largest jalapeño, these peppers measure as much as 5 in. (13 cm) long!  Most 2 to 3 inches.

On May 10, 1995, Texas chose the jalapeno as the state pepper.

For gardeners, on average, one jalapeno plant can produce 50 to 100 jalapenos.
