Coconut Oil Eases Sunburn

Coconut oil can reduce recovery from a sunburn 3 days faster than by using commercial creams and ointments.

According to a report in the International Journal of Dermatology, coconut oil can help ease itching and peeling due to sunburn.

Dermatologists advise cooling the sunburned skin before applying coconut oil.  The oil can hold in the heat making the burn feel worse. A cool bath, shower, or compress should be used before applying any oils, ointments, or creams.

Coconut oil is easy to use.  Simply apply it to the affected skin and let it soak in for 5 to 10 minutes.  Any excess can be gently wiped off.

Additionally, coconut oil moisturizes, adds nutrients, and it’s antioxidants lower the signs of aging that result from the ultraviolet rays.

While coconut oil is excellent for protecting skin after a sunburn, it is not a sunblock, so standard sunblock products should be used before exposure to the sun.
