Grapes Protect Against Sunburn

Health Tip of the Day

Eating grapes can assist the body in preventing sunburn before exposure to the sun.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, scientists have found that the nutrients in grapes, called polyphenols, help protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation.

The test, conducted at the University of Alabama, with participant’s ingesting whole-grape powder, found that eating just 2 1/4 cups of fresh grapes daily for 2 weeks rendered the skin 75 percent less sensitive to the burning rays.

The scientists also found that the skin suffered less inflammation, less cell death, and decreased DNA damage which can lead to future skin cancer.

Grapeseed oil can also be applied to healthy skin to prevent and reverse damage to the skin from ultraviolet rays. Dermatologists recommend using the oil by itself on small spots, or mixed with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or almond oil, for larger areas.
