Easy Orange Doughnut Recipe

Orange doughnuts with an easy to make orange flavored icing are sweetened with a hidden ingredient that creates a tasty surprise.

Easy Orange Doughnuts with Icing

3 1/2 cups flour
1 pkg. dry yeast
1 1/4 cups milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg
2 Tbsp. fresh orange peel
1 tsp salt
20 to 24 sugar cubes
1/4 to 1/2 cup orange juice for flavoring sugar cubes

Mix flour with yeast.
Heat milk, sugar, shortening, and salt until warm between 115 to 120 F.
Add to flour mixture.
Add egg.
Mix together to make a soft dough.  Add additional flour if necessary.
Place into a greased bowl and let rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until double in size.
Punch down, knead lightly, and let rest for 10 minutes.

Divide dough into 20 to 24 pieces.
Dip sugar cube into orange juice for a few seconds until sugar cube absorbs juice.
Wrap each piece of dough around a sugar cube being sure to pinch edges together to close seam.
Place 2 or 3 rolls of dough into oil heated to 365 F.
Fry 2 to 3 minutes turning gently until doughnut is golden brown.  Drain on paper towel.
Repeat until all doughnuts are fried.

Orange Icing

1 cup powdered sugar
2 Tbsp undiluted orange juice concentrate
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
4 drops yellow food coloring (optional)
2 drops red food coloring (optional)

Mix well.  Use more or less food coloring until desired shade of orange is reached.

Brush icing onto warm doughnuts.
