Health Tip of the Day

Wasps can be kept away with lemons because wasps do not like the scent of lemon.

An easy way to keep wasps away from a picnic, or patio table, or other outdoor gathering is to slice a lemons in half.  Place them cut side up.  The scent will keep wasps away.  Some people have found even better results by sticking a few whole cloves into the lemons.  As an added benefit this method keeps bees away too.

Since wasps do not like the smell of citrus, oranges can be used in the same manner, although lemons seem to bring better results.

According to pest control services, lemongrass is useful for keeping wasps at bay.  Simply place a few drops of lemongrass essential oil into a bottle of soapy water.  Add other scents that wasps don’t like, such as clove, peppermint, and citronella.  Spray in areas where wasps are not wanted or where wasps tend to build nests.

Lemon extract can be used as a repellent.  Mix one and a half tablespoons of lemon extract to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle.  Spray area to keep wasps away.   Lemon extract also can be used to kill wasps.  Use 3 tablespoons of lemon extract to 1 cup of water to kill wasps on contact.  This mixture can also be sprayed on wasp nests while the wasps are away from the nest.  The wasps will not return to the nest.
