Pet Tip of the Day
Dog paws are hardworking just like human hands and feet are hardworking. Here are some little-known facts about dog paws.
Dogs walk on their toes, not their heels like humans do.
Besides panting, the only way for dogs to cool themselves in hot weather is by sweating through special merocrine sweat glands found in the paw pads. When stressed, upset, or nervous, dogs can experience sweaty feet, just like people experience sweaty palms.
Paw pads do not freeze when dogs walk in snow because of special fat tissue in the pads. However, the pads can still become frostbitten. Paw pads can also be burned or blistered from walking on hot cement or asphalt in summer.
Dog paws should be tended to just as human hands and feet do. Herbal lotions, creams, and balms are excellent products to keep paw pads soft and healthy.
