How to Easily Clean Coffee Grinder

Cleaning Tip of the Day

Small electric coffee grinders are great for grinding a few coffee beans for a fresh cup of coffee on the spur of the moment. They are also superb for grinding whole spices into powder for baking recipes. But they can be difficult to clean. Here are some tips on how to quickly clean those encrusted blades.

Grind 1/4 cup rice for about a minute. Pour out the pulverized rice. Wipe with a damp cloth.

Whisk away grinder grime with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Grind for half a minute. The sugar will remove odors as well as powder residue.

Kosher salt ran through a grinder will also remove both residue and odors.

Grinding a slice of dried bread will absorb odors, grime, and any rancid oils left by coffee beans or spices.

Corn grits and steel-cut oatmeal are also great scrubbers for coffee grinders.

Grinders should be cleaned at least once a week, or daily if various spices are ground.
