Rose Hips For Arthritis

Rose Hips For Arthritis

Health Tip of the Day

Rose hips are an excellent alternative to aspirin and other pain relievers for arthritis.

Rose hips are a fruit that results from the blossom of the Rosa canina family of roses.

Rose hips contain vitamin C, E, B, antioxidants, and minerals. The rose hips also have polyphenols and anthocyanins which ease inflammation and prevent joint damage that can result from arthritis.

According to a report in Australian Family Physician, Australian scientists have found that the anti-inflammatory properties of rosehips ease arthritis pain as well as aspirin, and the prescription drug indomethacin. The scientists report that drinking 3 cups of rose hip tea daily brings relief of arthritic pain in 4 days. The studies showed that after 3 months, rose hip users had less pain than those subjects taking placebos.

For general pain relief, the scientists recommend one teaspoon of rose hip powder dissolved in one cup of boiling water or fruit juice. Drink 2 times a day for 4 months for best results.

The scientists found that test subjects taking 5000 mg of rose hips capsules or tablets daily for 3 months suffered less stiffness and pain than subjects taking sugar pills.

As a bonus, consuming rose hips also boosts the immune system helping to prevent colds, flu, and other viruses.

Of course, anyone taking supplements for medical conditions should consult their doctor first.
